Plain Boards

Hanne Willmann together with Vij5

“At Vij5 we like to tell stories through our products. But we also understand that sometimes you just need beautiful, functional products without a complicated concept. Made with high quality materials and touched by a good designer. Simple, functional, everyday products to complement the more experimental and conceptual eye catchers in our collection and in your home. The Plain Boards are just that.”

– Arjan & Anieke

The Plain Boards are a practical addition to the special Prägen Boards that Hanne Willmann designed for Vij5 in 2017. The cutting boards are inspired by the existing Prägen Boards in terms of design language but, unlike the presentation boards, have no relief side. This makes them extremely suitable as a functional cutting board.

The Plain Boards are made of beech wood, a relatively softer type of wood that is pre-eminently suited to keep knives in good condition. Beech wood also has an anti-bacterial effect. The boards serve as useful everyday companions and additionally embellish your kitchen. The circle shaped handles are perfect to carry them around or to hang them on the wall, making a nice arrangement through a geometrical pattern.

A wooden cutting board can last a very long time if you maintain it properly.

Therefore, please follow the following tips:Wash the cutting board by hand after use and dry with a tea towel as soon as possible. Do not soak in water. After drying, preferably place the board upright or hang it on the hanging ring. It is important that the grain of the wood is vertical. This reduces warping of the wood.

PLEASE NOTE: the Plain Boards are not suitable for the dishwasher.

The Plain Boards are treated with grape seed oil and therefore ready for use. If the board feels dried out after some time, we recommend applying a new layer of grape seed oil. If you do this regularly, you extend the lifespan of the cutting board. Drip some grape seed oil on the (dry) board and rub it in with a piece of kitchen paper or a clean dishcloth.

In addition, we recommend thoroughly cleaning the cutting board every 2 to 3 months (depending on how intensively the board is used.) Coat the board with lemon juice or white vinegar and sprinkle with sea salt. Rub the mixture well with kitchen paper and leave for 15 minutes. Then rinse the board and dry it well. (It is important that the board is thoroughly dry so that the oil can be properly absorbed.) Then drip some grape seed oil on the board and rub it in with a piece of kitchen paper or a clean dishcloth. Let the oil settle in gently and repeat the oiling step until the board no longer absorbs oil. Remove any excess oil with kitchen paper.
