Moonrise
Mirror

As the moon orbits the earth it shows itself to us in different guises. The Moonrise Mirror is a round mirror inspired by the different phases of the moon and its graphic translation.

The mirror is split into two ‘hemispheres’, made of a combination of clear and coloured mirror glass.

The back of the mirror is a handmade solid oak ring and provides a simple construction to hang the mirror in any position to suit the mood and needs of the user.

Transparency of the production chain comes naturally to us.

For us, that doesn't just mean giving information about where something has been produced. Our chain starts much earlier: with the designer of the product!

DESIGN

The Moonrise Mirror was designed by Danish designer Michael Funch. His Design are simple and honest, inspired by raw materials and the making process. He uses design as a tool to gain insight into what we can do with what we have.

Because the angle at which the moon is illuminated by the sun changes, relative to the angle at which it is viewed from Earth, the moon as seen from Earth is sometimes (partially) illuminated and (partially) dark. This marks the seasons and the passing of the month. This phenomenon and its graphic translation was the basis for the design of the Moonrise Mirror.

Michael Funch

"For the design of the Moonrise Mirror, I was inspired by the different phases of the moon."

Michael Funch

The balance between light and dark in the lunar cycle defines a time of growth and a new start with the moon in the "first quarter. The moon is then exactly half lit and will become increasingly full from here on. This phase symbolizes the spring season. In the mirror, this phase is translated with the color green.

The "last quarter" represents the beginning of the end of the cycle where old structures are broken down and the way is prepared for new structures: autumn. Again, the moon is exactly half-exposed, but will get darker and darker from here on. In the mirror, this phase is translated with the color copper.

CURATE & TRANSLATE

The Moonrise Mirror has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2015. We have known Michael since college because he worked as an intern for Vij5 . The Moonrise Mirror project came about during his internship period. After his graduation from the Design Academy Eindhoven, we further developed the mirror into a marketable product together with Michael and in collaboration with our wood manufacturer.
