Shade

The Long Shade is a 'hybrid' LED lamp that feels at home in both domestic and contemporary office environments. The lamp owes its name to the subtle reference to an archetypal lampshade (visible as a silhouette at the end of the lamp) combined with the extended length of the available models.

The long versions of the Long Shade are equipped with a switch to control both light colour and light intensity. This allows you to switch between brighter office light and/or dimmed ambient light.

Variations

The LED400 version has a special 'High Power LED strip' hidden between its wings. This has a significant light output for the small 400mm length.

The longer LED800 and LED1200 versions have more length, but also an extra functionality built in. By means of a switch, both the light color and the light intensity can be controlled. The basic setting is 'Extra Warm White' (±2700K), the perfect atmosphere for the home. By converting the switch to 'Warm White' (±3000K), the light output doubles with a whiter light colour, making the lamp more suitable for, for example, reading the newspaper, doing some work on the laptop or a professional office environment.

The Long Shade was designed by Eindhoven-based design studio Daphna Laurens, founded by Daphna Isaacs and Laurens Manders. In their designs, they strive to bring together applied and visual art, with the aim of transforming everyday products into objects with their own identity.

They designed the Long Shade especially for the Vij5 collection. Their starting point in the design process was the shape of an archetypal lampshade (visible as a silhouette at the end of the lamp).

The Long Shade has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2015.

A Vij5 product always has something to do with our personal preference. However, after almost 15 years we have the feeling that our collection is starting to speak for itselfand we are happy to notice designers are starting to understand what we are looking for in a design. A nice example of this is the Long Shade by Daphna Laurens.

We have known Daphna and Laurens personally for a few years and they designed this LED lamp especially for us. They collected some of our thoughts through various conversations and interpreted these ideas in their own beautiful way. With the Long Shade as a result!

We hung the prototype of the Long Shade at home to test the licth color of the LED and of course we left it hanging!

Developing a (LED) lamp involves quite a lot of work. Especially Arjan and Laurens earn the credits for the technical development of the Long Shade.

The challenge was not to mount the drivers needed to drive LED on the ceiling, but to integrate them into the narrow wooden frame of the lamp. This makes the suspension mechanism of the lamp as simple as possible and allows the lamp to be connected to the standard mains voltage.

In 2018, in addition to the LED 400 and the LED 800, we also introduced an extra long LED 1200 variant of the Long Shade. This version was originally made at the request of a customer after which we decided to include this XL version in our collection. This new length made the lamp even more suitable to be placed above a long dining table or a large desk.

The Long Shade consists of various parts which, with the exception of the LED strips, are all made in our region.

The caps are made at our steel producer in Bergeijk (NL) with a laser cutter and set to get the beautiful curve.

Powder coating is done in small series, or sometimes even custom, at our regular powder coater in Valkenswaard (NL). We usually have caps in standard colours in stock for faster delivery.

The wood for the frame comes from our wood producer in Kelpen-Oler (NL) where solid oak from France is processed into panels.

The panels are then milled in 3D at our partner in Hapert (NL).

The lamp is then assembled and packed at Vij5 .

The three available lengths give the possibility to create a sleek, businesslike, but also a more relaxed and playful composition.
