This year, Vij5 explored the boundaries of crowdfunding by inviting the community to influence one of the most essential choices in a design process; choosing colour. The experiment was centred around the TwoTowel. A towel and a tea towel intertwined into one product, inspired by two items which are commonly used next to each other.
In a preliminary round, the audience submitted 80 different colour combinations. Five finalists came from this, acting as a basis for our crowdfunding campaign via the platform of Voordekunst.nl in the month of October 2018.
In the Vij5 Showroom, the five different colour combinations of the finalists were translated into five different interior settings. In this way, visitors got a better idea about how each colour combination could fit the Vij5 collection in a different way.
During the Dutch Design Week, visitors of the Vij5 Showroom were able to directly influence the colour of the new production batch. People could vote by pre-ordering a set of TwoTowels choosing their favourite combination as preferred reward in the crowdfunding campaign. The crowdfunding campaign was successful with 107% so the most chosen colour combination will actually be made!
Besides the crowdfunding campaign, we also presented four new products that were displayed in the centre of the showroom: The Trestle Table and BL28 LED light designed by David Derksen, the Glint Light designed by Susanne de Graef and a new barstool designed by Floris Hovers.
